This week, the first public unveiling of Starsector, a new building station to replace the aging Hudson Yards, will take place in Washington, D.C. The Starsector facility will be built near the Hudson Yards at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Seventh Street NW.
Starsector will be the first new building project to be built in the city for at least a decade.
Built in 2003 and 2008, the complex was initially planned to be the centerpiece of the U.S. Post Office, but it eventually became a parking garage.
Starsectors building, which will feature a “Starsector” theme park, will be used to house the new Starsector hotel and restaurant, as well as the Hudson Arms and an adjacent “Star Sector” retail complex.
StarSEVEN, the new hotel and other space for Starsector visitors, is scheduled to open later this year.
The Hudson Yards project, which was initially meant to be finished by 2018, has been delayed by several years, with construction now slated to start later this spring.
“The Starsector project has been a long time coming, and this is just a first step in the right direction to begin construction,” said Mike Shulman, president and CEO of the Washington Post Company, which owns the newspaper.
“It will help us attract more tourists to Washington, DC, and the rest of the country, which is really important.”
The Hudson Arms building, meanwhile, will feature an additional 100,000 square feet of retail space, including a “starsectors” retail center and a restaurant.
Starseed, a private space company that is also working on Starsector expansion, will also be providing services at Starseeds retail center, which opened last year.
In addition to the hotel and retail space at Starsector’s Hudson Yards location, Starseed also plans to create a “shopping center” with new restaurants and retail stores at the site.
Star Seeds chief executive Steve Jansen told Polygon that the Starseed project has received much of the public’s support.
“We’ve been building this complex in conjunction with the Hudson Yard development for a number of years, and it’s just a testament to the support we’ve received from the people of Washington, the state of Washington and the entire U. S. for this project,” Jansen said.
“Our team has been working tirelessly with the federal government, local officials and state government officials to ensure that the project meets all the requirements, and that all of the people who live and work in Washington have access to this facility.”
Starsevent, which includes the Hudson Farms, will have about 150,000 total square feet and a planned opening date of 2021.
